Benjamin Dooley had been a deputy sheriff for a long time.

He had actually been with the sheriff’s department before Tom Myers came on board as a deputy himself, several years before he went and got himself elected sheriff. During those years of service, Dooley had seen his fair share of action. Sommersville, for all of its small, sleepy little town trappings, was as far removed from classic Mayberry as you could get. Before Sommersville proper became a city, the sheriff’s department had policed both town and county equally and with a much smaller police force.

The growth of Sommersville in the intervening years brought with it new opportunities, new business, additional taxable capital, new homes, and new money, and more people. It also brought with it increase in the crime rate.

Outside of the serial killer incident a few years earlier, Sommersville’s crime stats tended to run more toward the mundane and ordinary. Arguments that got out of hand, a little too much drink leading to angry words and fists thrown, speeders and working accident scenes, things like that.

A large part of Sommersville County was undeveloped. That tended to be where most of the sheriff department’s problems occurred.

Undeveloped did not mean uninhabited, however. There were entire families living out in the woods, completely self-sustained, that had cut themselves off from the world at large. All they wanted was to live their lives in peace. For the most part, they left them alone and let them do just that.

There have been a few exceptions, times when scuffles turned into a Hatfields and McCoys type situation. Dooley could recall with perfect clarity how bad the last one had been. He came close to dying a couple of times back then, and he was much younger then.

Occasionally, one of them would wander out of the woods and into town, but such sightings were rare.

There were mines in the hills and mountains beyond Sommersville’s borders as the county lay at the foot of the Appalachian mountain range. There were also tales of small cabins dotting the landscape, some used for hunting and poaching, while others provided home to moonshiners and seditionists who had been hiding out in the badlands, as undeveloped Sommersville used to be called, for decades, many of whom were not aware that the Vietnam War from which they had fled was ended.

He figured that the search for Bates Hewell was going to end up taking him back out there into the wilderness before all was said and done.

An eventuality he was not looking forward to at all.

He suspected that Tom Myers knew his trepidation, which was why he had his most senior deputy and second in command playing babysitter outside the ICU at Sommersville Medical Center. The two deputy U.S. Marshals that were injured in the gunfight and subsequent explosion at the safe house, Pete Messer and Amy Street remained in ICU. They were unconscious, but Deputy Street had woken earlier. The doctors gave her a sedative that put her out quickly so she could rest and recover.
